San Mateo County
The County of San Mateo was granted sovereign tide and submerged lands in trust in 1893 for public purposes. In 1947, a portion of the County’s grant was granted to the City and County of San Francisco for airport uses in connection with the San Francisco Airport. In 1965, the County was granted sovereign tide and submerged lands in trust in property lying partly in the City of San Mateo and partly in the City of Burlingame. The County’s grant allows for the establishment, improvement and conduct of a harbor, small boat harbor, airport, heliport, aviation facilities, marinas, aquatic playgrounds and similar recreational facilities, for the construction, reconstruction, repair, maintenance and operation of public buildings, public assembly and meeting places, convention centers, parks, playgrounds, bathhouses and bathing facilities, recreation and fishing piers, public recreation facilities, works, buildings, facilities, utilities, structures, and appliances that promote and accommodate these uses or are incidental, necessary or convenient for the promotion and accommodation of commerce and navigation by air or water.
