San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Units 2 and 3 Post-Shutdown Decommissioning Project
Staff Update - May 2018
Southern California Edison and the co-owners of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) (Co-Applicants) recently proposed minor modifications to the SONGS Units 2 and 3 Decommissioning Project. The Commission currently anticipates releasing the Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) in mid- to late-June 2018 for a 60-day pubilc comment period. The EIR will analyze the Co-Applicant' proposal to decontaminate and dismantle the SONGS onshore facilities; to remove, partially remove, or leave in place the offshore conduits (18-foot-inner-diameter, concrete intake and discharge pipelines) used for seawater cooling of SONGS Units 2 and 3; and to restore the site over the next 1 to 3 decades.
SONGS, which is subject to a license from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is located in northern San Diego County, approximately 51 miles north-northwest of the city of San Diego and 3 miles south-southeast of the city of San Clemente, Orange County. The onshore SONGS site lies entirely within the boundaries of the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The offshore area is located on sovereign land leased by the Commission (Lease No. PRC 6785.1).
