MARINE FACILITIES DIVISION

The California State Lands Commission's Marine Facilities Division has been presented the prestigious Legacy Award of 2001 "In recognition of extraordinary efforts to prevent oil spills."  In particular, the Commission was cited for developing the Safety Assessment of Management Systems, or "SAMS."

SAMS is a voluntary, no cost, audit available to the marine industry.  It is designed to provide managers and operating personnel with a snapshot of the present condition of safety systems in place at their facility.

The Legacy Award is presented annually by the Pacific States/British Columbia Oil Spill Task Force to those organizations that have demonstrated innovation, management commitment, and improvements in oil spill prevention, preparedness, or response.  Mr. Gary Gregory, the Chief of the Marine Facilities Division, accepted the Award on the behalf of the Division at the Task Force's annual meeting in Victoria, British Columbia on July 17, 2001.

Other 2001 Award recipients were:

(1) Tesoro Alaska Company (Anchorage, AK)
(2) Island Tug and Barge (Vancouver, BC)
(3) The California State Lands Commission's Marine Facilities Division (Long Beach, CA)
(4) Clean Seas, LLC (Carpinteria, CA)
(5) A team award to the Canadian Coast Guard, Marine Programs; Transport Canada Marine Safety; and the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Puget Sound.
